Muzeul a fost infiintat in anul 1965 si deschis pentru public prin stradania muzeografului serbanescu Done. Tematica a fost intocmita de Sorin Grosu, director adjunct la Muzeul Literaturii Romane. Tematica a fost imbogatita in anul 1978 de etnograful Din
