Colonia Ulpia Traiana a fost intemeiata in anii 108 - 110, iar, sub imparatul Hadrian, i se adauga epitetul de Sarmizegetusa. Alexandru Severus ii da titlul de Metropolis, reusind sa devina metropola provinciei.
